NASI lemak, char kway teow, roti canai, ice kacang, satay, and the list goes on.
With such mouth-watering delights tempting us every day, Malaysians face an uphill battle when it comes to dieting.
Malaysian Dr Joseph Chang, chief scientific officer at international direct-selling firm Nu Skin, is all too familiar with our local diet, which is very much based on carbohydrates, such as rice and noodles.
“That’s not all. Malaysian taste buds are also trained to enjoy food that are made tasty using oil and fat,” he added, citing the example of nasi lemak, whereby the rice is boiled with rich coconut milk, and local desserts which are loaded with sugar.
“It’s almost impossible to abstain completely from all these delicacies, but, if you eat half of the portion, then it may help. Nobody can stay on a diet. It’s called a diet because it is temporary. What people really need is an eating plan,” said the US-based Dr Chang.

Nu Skin chief scientific officer Dr Joseph Chang said that an eating plan is important. |
Such an eating plan is featured as a key component in a new product called ageLOC TR90, developed by Dr Chang and his team at Nu Skin to help consumers lose weight and stay lean.
Expected to be launched in Malaysia later this year, the product will enable consumers to change their body composition in 90 days with a weight management system that promotes healthy metabolism, lean muscle and appetite control.
As one of the leading firms in anti-ageing science, Nu Skin discovered that there was a need to help people develop healthier bodies as studies showed that 65% of consumers were not satisfied with their body image.
During Nu Skin’s recent global convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States, Dr Chang debunked three myths on weight management.
“The first myth is that all weight loss is good. It’s actually more important to have more lean muscles as they are the body’s metabolic engine. The more lean muscles we have, the better the ability to burn calories. The common mistake people make is equating overall weight loss with successful weight loss, but it is really about getting the right body composition,” he said, adding that even thin people may have a high percentage of fat in their body.
Quashing two other myths, Dr Chang said it wasn’t true that our body shape was determined by our inherited genes, and that there was no magic bullet to make body weight problems melt away.
To achieve healthy weight loss via the ageLOC TR90, one will be given proprietary nutritional products and would be required to follow a science-based eating plan, along with lifestyle suggestions.
In the eating plan, ageLOC TR90 users will be taught to eat less of “storingfoods” like refined carbohydrates and fatty foods, and focus on maintaining protein, fruit and vegetable intake.
The eating plan guide also teaches users how to measure portions easily by the size of their fists and palms so that they can have the right balance of nutrients in their diet throughout the 90 days.
The ageLOC TR90 package in Malaysia includes five products to support the consumer’s journey for weight loss, namely the ageLOC TR90 Jumpstart, ageLOC TR90 Control (CTP) , ageLOC TR90 TrimShake, TRA Complex (CPLEX) and LifePak.
While the TrimShake is a protein drink, the ageLOC TR90 Jumpstart is a mix to be taken with water or another beverage for the first 15 days to get users primed for success. This is aimed at improving metabolism and appetite control.

Nu Skin South-East Asia and Pacific Regions president Melisa Tantoco Quijano expects the launch of the ageLOC TR90 in Malaysia to be well-received. |
The TRA Complex (CPLEX) tablets will help support metabolic factors leading to weight loss whereas the LifePak mix provides users with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
One of the more interesting components in the programme is the ageLOC Control capsules, which will help improve the user’s mood and mindset to help enhance willpower so that one will stay on track with the programme in achieving the set goals for a leaner body.
Developed through Nu Skin’s research on gene expression, the Control capsules were formulated to support a positive mood during the programme and reduce food cravings.
On a more conventional note, the ageLOC TR90 programme also recommends users to exercise – anything from jogging to swimming – as long as it’s an activity they enjoy, for at least 30 minutes a session for three times a week.
With so much promise, Nu Skin South-East Asia and Pacific Regions president, Melisa Tantoco Quijano, expects the launch of the ageLOC TR90 in Malaysia to be well-received.
“Malaysia has a big market for weight management and we are very optimistic,” she said, adding that Malaysian distributors were very passionate in promoting products.
She said it was Nu Skin’s goal to be among the top three multi-level marketing companies in South-East Asia and currently, it is among the top five in Malaysia.
“Nu Skin president and chief executive officer, M. Truman Hunt, has recently posed a challenge to the company – to earn U$10bil in sales by 2020, so that we can provide distributors with U$4bil in sales compensation!” Quijano said.
However, the company is not all about sales figures as Quijano, who is from the Philippines, said Nu Skin also conducts a strong corporate social responsibility programme via its Force For Good Foundation.
“In Malaysia, Nu Skin worked together with the National Heart Institute by partially sponsoring heart operations for children aged 10 and below,” she said, adding that the company hoped to remove the queue of 5,000 children waiting for operations in South-East Asia.
The ageLOC TR90 product will be available from independent Nu Skin distributors in a 90-day supply package.
